1899: Pasquale Ievoli leaves Italy and comes to America. Through a clerical error at Ellis Island his name would become Jeveli. After arriving in the U.S., Pasquale joined the U. S. Navy and fought in the Spanish/American War. When the war ended, he married an Italian woman named Agatha Di Nisi and would bring into the world Louis, Armand, Edmund, Evilyn, Lucia, and Ted. In 1924, Pasquale opened Jeveli's in East Boston. At the time it only seated about 30 people but the restaurant was a success. The hours were long; a normal shift for Pasquale was 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Edmund would work with his father in the early years and Louis "Lefty" would work in the restaurant for most of his life.
1943: After Pasquale passed away, Armand would take over the restaurant. The youngest son Ted was in the U.S. Navy during the Second World War and upon returning home would assist Armand in the day to day management of Jeveli's.
1957: Armand passes away leaving Ted in charge of the restaurant. Ted would rely heavily on his wife Muriel, two daughters Connie and Sandy, and his son Eric to help him run the restaurant making it truly a family business. In 1967, the first addition "The Mediterranean Room" was built adding 120 seats to the restaurant. Again in 1982, Ted would build another dining room simply called the "New Room" which would add 75 more seats to Jeveli's.
1987: Ted retires and his son Eric takes over day to day management of the restaurant. Eric has worked at Jeveli's since he was 14 years of age, he has done everything from dishwashing to head chef and has brought Jeveli's to its current level of excellence. Over the years, Eric's sons Wayne and Teddy have worked at the restaurant as well as his step-son Marcos. His most memorable achievement was when he had the honor and pleasure of personally cooking for President Clinton and over 70 of his staff in 1997. After the President's visit, Eric remodeled the "New Room" to its current incarnation, "The Presidential Room". The success of Jeveli's is due in large part to the well-trained staff, many of which have been working at Jeveli's for over 25 years.
Today, Jeveli's seats 228 people and serves on average over 250,000 people a year. The bulk of our business comes from those diehard regulars who love the comfortable atmosphere and history the restaurant offers.
